The Family of Nnamdi Kanu is suing the Kenyan Government over its alleged role in the extradition of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra to Nigeria, earlier this year.
This was disclosed by Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Kingsley, in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg.
The report names Kenyan Attorney General Paul Kariuki, Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti and three other officials as respondents.
His family accuses the Kenyan Government of unlawfully detaining Kanu at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi on June 19 and ‘illegally and stealthily’ extraditing him to Nigeria a week later.
“They (Kenyan Government) did not demonstrate that a warrant had been issued by a Nigerian court or that the extradition process was commenced in Kenya,” the family argued, citing concerns that he may be getting tortured by Nigerian authorities.
They also added in a statement that Kenyan authorities are responsible for Kanu’s kidnap and extraordinary rendition and committed the most serious crime as those authorities should be held to account.

Nnamdi Kanu, who has been on the run after jumping bail was arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria in June 2021.
Recall Nairametrics reported in July that the trial of the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu had been adjourned till October 21st, according to one of the DSS-approved media agencies covering the trial in Abuja, after Kanu was reportedly absent at the hearing, requesting a visit from a doctor for a comprehensive check-up.
The Federal Government added that Kanu will be charged with 11 charge counts of treason, treasonable felony, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms, among others.
